Whilst we strive to keep things simple, we sometimes need to use industry-standard terminology to help customers compare products. This glossary is designed to aid your understanding of these terms.
Airflow
The flow of air through an object like a vacuum cleaner. It is measured in litres per second (L/Sec) or cubic feet per minute (CFM).
Airflow Control Handle
A specially designed handle that enables the user to manually adjust the draw (suction) of air flowing up through the wand by opening or closing a valve on the handle.
Air Mover

Air Watts
This is a vacuum cleaner specific measurement of the peak air power. Combines the performance of both the Airflow and Pressure measurements.
Allergens
Substances like dust particles that can cause irritation and in extreme cases could lead to an allergic reaction.
All Floor Cleaning
Suitable for cleaning all floor types, including carpets and hard floors.
Amps
Short for ampere, this is used to measure the electric current or the number of electrons flowing through a circuit.
Amp Hours (Ah)
This is how much amperage is provided each hour. When combined with nominal voltage this defines the maximum energy (Wh) stored in a battery.
Anti-Static Accessory System
Prevents the build-up of static charge and blockages caused by ultra-fine grain particles building up within the connection system.
Autonomous
Another word for fully automatic. Something like a robot mower that works on its own and independent of others.
Bagless Vacuum Cleaner
Otherwise known as a cyclonic vacuum cleaner, this vacuum cleaner type captures dust and dirt in a canister as opposed to a bag. Find out more about the Vacmaster range.
Boundary Wire
This wire sits around the perimeter of an area. Most robot mowers come with a boundary wire to keep the mower in a defined mowing area.
Brushless Motor
Commonly found in modern lawnmowers, a brushless motor is a high-quality motor with an extremely long life.
Brush Roll
The rotating brush bar found in the floorhead on a vacuum cleaner.
Bypass Motor
Bypass motors provide an independent airflow stream for both motor cooling and working vacuum airflow.
Cartridge Filter
A common type of filter used in appliances like wet and dry vacuum cleaners to filter dirt from liquids.
Castors
Another word for the swivelling wheels an object like a cylinder vacuum cleaner moves around on.
Charging Adapter
A cable that connects an appliance like a vacuum cleaner to a wall socket for charging.
Charging Station
A standalone platform used for charging objects like cordless vacuum cleaners and robot lawnmowers.

Collection Tank

Continuous Run Time
The length of time something like a cordless vacuum cleaner runs for when used continuously from a fully charged battery.
Cordless Lawnmower

Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
A type of vacuum cleaner that runs from a battery. Lithium Ion batteries are usually used for this type of appliance.
Crevice Tool
A common vacuum cleaner attachment that facilitates the cleaning of corners and other crevices around the home.
Cutting Pattern
The pattern created when cutting objects like a lawn. A common cutting pattern for grass is striped.
Cutting Width
The width of the cutting path of appliances like lawnmowers.
Cyclonic Vacuum Cleaner

Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
A type of vacuum cleaner that collects dirt in a drum or cylinder for disposal.
Decibels (dB)
A unit for measuring the relative loudness of sounds emitting from appliances like vacuum cleaners.
Detachable Handheld Vacuum
A handheld vacuum that detaches from the main body of a vacuum cleaner for cleaning the car, stairs etc.

For use around the home or for personal use.
Drainage Port
An outlet plug located on the collection tank to easily dispose of liquid waste.
Dry Vacuum
A vacuum cleaner for collecting dry dust and dirt only.
Dual Motor
An appliance with two separate motors each conducting a separate task.
Dust Bags
The bags used to collect dry dust and dirt within a vacuum cleaner.
Dust Capacity
The maximum amount of dry dust and dirt that can be safely collected when vacuuming.
Dust Extractor
An industrial wet and dry vacuum used for collecting heavy duty dust and dirt from building sites, factories etc.
Electric Lawnmower

Exhaust Filter
A filter that captures dust and dirt at the point of it leaving the exhaust of an appliance like a vacuum cleaner.
Extension Wand
An extension tube used on a vacuum cleaner to facilitate reach into corners and up high.
Fast Charger
A charger for a cordless appliance that replenishes the power within the battery within a short space of time.
Filter
A layer of material that captures dirt from the air passing through it. Filters should be cleaned or replaced regularly to maintain suction performance.
Fine Filtration Bags
Dust bags for a vacuum cleaner that filter out fine dust and dirt. Often these bags have multiple layers.
Firmware
The software used to configure appliances like robotic lawnmowers. It is common for firmware to need updating over time.
Float Valve
A safety device designed to emit a high pitched operational noise and reduce suction performance when the vacuum cleaner reaches its maximum capacity when collecting liquid.
Floorhead
Also called a floor tool is the part of a vacuum cleaner that captures the dust and dirt from the floor.
Garden Vacuum Cleaner
A wet and dry vacuum cleaner designed for use in the garden and for other outdoor spaces.
Grass Box
The box or bag used to collect grass cuttings ejected from a lawnmower.
Grass Trimmer (Strimmer)

Hedge Trimmer

HEPA Filtration
A type of filtration system found on appliances like vacuum cleaners. The higher the filtration grade, the finer the filtration level.
Hover Mower
A type of lawnmower that floats on a cushion of air making it very easy to manoeuvre around the lawn.
Hover Mower Collect
A type of hover mower that collects the grass in a grass box as the mower is used.
Hygiene Seal Bags
This dust bag has a special seal that closes the inlet of the bag when it is removed from the vacuum cleaner to avoid dirt becoming airborne during disposal.
Industrial Use
An appliance like a dust extractor that is designed for heavy duty use on construction sites, factories etc.
Inflator Nozzle Adaptors
A set of adaptors that can be attached to a vacuum cleaner for inflating objects like airbeds, balls etc.
Kilopascals (KPa)
A standard for measuring the peak suction pressure of an appliance like a vacuum cleaner.

Lift Off Technology
A modern feature used on vacuum cleaners that allows the user to remove the floorhead from the cleaner to facilitate cleaning the stairs, car and up high.
Lithium Ion Battery
A stable and reliable source for powering larger appliances like cordless vacuum cleaners and grass trimmers.
M Class Dust Extractors
A type of industrial wet and dry vacuum cleaner used to collect medium toxicity dusts.
Micron
The size of a particle of dust collected in appliances like vacuum cleaners.
Mulching
The process of finely cutting grass and returning it to the lawn's surface to act as a nutrient.
Mulching Plug
The device that can be inserted into the chute of a lawnmower to mulch grass clippings instead of collecting them.
Noise Level
Measured in decibels (dB) this is the noise emitted from appliances like vacuum cleaners and lawnmowers. Noise can be reported in different ways. Sound pressure is at operators ear and sound power is emitted from the machine.
On Board Power Socket
Otherwise known as a power take off socket, this is a plug socket, usually found on the front or top of a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, that synchronises the operation of the vacuum cleaner with your power tool.
Peg Driver
A specially designed tool used for installing pegs to support the boundary wire of a robotic lawnmower.
Pet Tool
A specially designed tool used for collecting pet hair and dander.
Pivoting Blade
Also known as a flail blade, this is a type of blade used on some types of lawnmower and scarifier that pivots on agitation to facilitate a better cut over uneven surfaces.
Plant Guard
Also known as a tree guard, this is added to some grass trimmers to protect plants or bark from being accidentally cut during use.
Polymer
A type of plastic commonly used to make cylinder vacuum cleaners.
Power Head
The part of the appliance like a vacuum cleaner that contains the motor.
Power Take Off (PTO)
A plug socket, usually found on the front or top of a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, that synchronises the operation of the vacuum cleaner with your power tool.
Push Clean Filter (PCF)
Push Clean Filter Systems enable you to quickly and easily clean the filtration system of a vacuum cleaner during operation. Preventing clogged filters and maintaining a consistent, high suction power.
Rear Roller
This is the roller found on the back of a lawnmower that is used to bend and flatten the grass during mowing, allowing the creation of mowing patterns like stripes on the grass.
Redi-Bag
The type of bag supplied with LawnMaster lawnmowers that is quick and easy to use straight out of the box.
Round Dusting Tool
A type of attachment included with some upright vacuum cleaners that uses its soft bristles to dust objects around the home.
Safety Key
Also known as a child safety key, this is a removeable key used on appliances like lawnmowers to prevent accidental starting and unintended use.
Sealed Dust Management System
A type of dust management system that seals dust within the vacuum cleaner during cleaning.
Single Line Feed
The number of lines/wires used in a grass trimmer to facilitate cutting the grass.
Standard Filtration Bags
Dust bags for a vacuum cleaner that filter out the dust and dirt.
Striped Lawn
A type of mowing pattern created when mowing the lawn with a mower that has a rear roller.
Suction
The force used to suck up particles like dust and dirt in a vacuum cleaner.
Suction Hose
The hose used to connect the body of a vacuum cleaner to the floorhead or other attachment.
T-Drive
A high torque belt drive system found on some LawnMaster lawnmowers and shredders that reacts quickly and increases power on demand to reflect the cutting conditions.
TruView Bag Fill Technology
A technology found on some Vacmaster vacuum cleaners that indicates how full the bag is on operation.
Ultra Filtration Dust Bags
Dust bags for a vacuum cleaner that filter out fine dust and dirt.
Universal Power Tool Adaptor
A type of adaptor supplied with some appliances like wet and dry vacuum cleaners that facilitate the connection of a power tool.
Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Vacuum Pressure
Usually measured in kilopascals (KPa), this is the peak suction pressure level of an appliance like a wet and dry vacuum cleaner.
Variable Speed Control
Ability to adjust the motor speed providing a fully adaptable suction output of your dust extractor.
Voltage
The pressure from an electric circuit's power source pushing the charge through the circuit to power an appliance like a corded vacuum cleaner.
Voltage (Nominal)
This is the average voltage of a battery from fully charged to empty.
Voltage (Max)
This is the maximum voltage of a battery when it is fully charged.
Wattage
An amount of electrical power used to power an appliance like an air mover or fan.
Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner
A type of vacuum cleaner designed to clean up very fine dry dust like sawdust and bulky dirt, rubble and debris which may commonly block a traditional household vacuum cleaner. Working Range
The maximum distance an appliance like a corded vacuum cleaner can operate in when the cord and hose is fully extended.
Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL)
An HSE standard classification system used for L and M Class Dust Extractors used in an industrial setting like a construction site.
WrapFree Brush Roll
A type of brush roll featured on some Vacmaster vacuum cleaners that prevents the build up of hair and other long fibres on the brush roll which may otherwise impact performance.
